In the Area
Union City’s own Fire Marshal’s office inspects businesses every year in the mercantile, business, industrial, storage, assembly, hotel, apartment, school, and church classes, according to its published inspection rates from 2011, more than ten years old. Life-threatening violations must be fixed immediately, and other violations get time before a re-inspection. The FY2026 fee schedule charges nothing for the first re-inspection, then $100, $150, $200, and $250. Passing the first inspection avoids those fees.

The sprinkler plan review is $100 per riser with the permit included, and the sprinkler permit is listed at $100. The fire department accepts sprinkler plans only from contractors licensed by the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office, drawn by designers at NICET Level III or Georgia-licensed engineers. Minor repairs or adjustments are reported to the Inspections Division.
The city reviews commercial hood vent plans at $128 for 0 to 10 devices, $256 for 11 to 25, $384 for 26 to 50, and $512 for more than 50, with a $50 commercial vent system permit. The Fire Marshal handles hood suppression installs for commercial cooking. Count the devices on your hood before you budget.
A new business needs a Fire Marshal passing report with a $50 per-inspection fee, and a certificate of occupancy inspection costs $100, or $500 for a temporary one. A 2011 fire department memo, more than ten years old, says that inspection looks for a current tag on the sprinkler riser, extinguishers tagged by a Georgia-licensed company, a spare sprinkler head box and wrench, and 3 feet of clearance in front of electrical panels.
NWS recorded a 56-knot thunderstorm wind event on January 3, 2023, with trees and power lines down around Fairburn and Union City, and a 52-knot event on April 10, 2025. An insurer’s commercial-roof sheet says storms below hurricane strength can damage roofs and that flashing securement is crucial. Walk the property after any heavy-wind storm.
In Fairburn, the first fire inspection and one re-inspection are free, inspections need 24 hours’ notice, and construction is inspected at 80 and 100 percent. Sprinkler systems are tested with a fire pump test, pressure test, and water-flow test, and fire alarm systems with a smoke test and water-flow test.
