Questions
A thick layer of fallen leaves can damage grass, and leaves on drives and walkways can be a hazard. Pine straw mulch looks dingy after about a year, and tall fescue thins in summer and may need reseeding every few years. University of Georgia Extension says a turf renovation will work when 50 percent or more of the area still holds desirable turfgrass.
A grounds request is reviewed for the property, the season, and the scope, and approved work is quoted before work starts. University of Georgia Extension advises never removing more than one-third of the leaf tissue in a single mowing, which sets the next mowing at 3 inches for a lawn kept at 2. Mulch goes 2 to 3 inches deep and never against a tree trunk. You review the work, then receive the invoice.
The grass type, the mowing frequency, and the nitrogen a lawn needs each year set the scope, since University of Georgia Extension lists 1 to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet for centipedegrass and 2 to 5 for bermudagrass. Irrigation efficiency matters too, because EPA’s WaterSense program says improvements could cut outdoor water use by more than 50 percent. A seasonal calendar fits a preventive maintenance plan.
Georgia’s Water Stewardship Act allows outdoor watering of established landscapes on a public water system only between 4 p.m. and 10 a.m., year-round. New or replanted plants, seed, and turf can be watered at any time during installation and for 30 days after. Georgia’s cross-connection rule also requires backflow assemblies to be tested at least annually, which links irrigation to commercial plumbing.
University of Georgia Extension recommends crabgrass preemergence herbicide on North Georgia lawns between March 1 and 20, and cool-season grasses planted in fall four to six weeks before the first killing frost. After storms, the Georgia Forestry Commission advises delaying major pruning 6 to 12 months, except for hazardous limbs. Downed trees can land on roofs and power service, which brings in commercial roofing and commercial electrical checks.
