Dunwoody’s 2024 Tornado and Rooftop Equipment

On December 29, 2024, an EF0 tornado with winds of 65 to 85 mph touched down in Dunwoody and took part of the roof off a three-story apartment building. IBHS says roof corners and edges take the greatest wind uplift, edge flashing is the first defense, and rooftop equipment curbs must be properly attached and inspected before and after severe weather. Edge flashing and curb attachment are the two points that guidance names first.

A January 2013 DeKalb County memo names Dunwoody among the cities covered by the county Fire Marshal’s fee schedule for fire inspections and plan reviews, so fire plan reviews and inspections run through the DeKalb County Fire Marshal rather than a city office. The county’s May 2026 contracts report also lists a Fire Rescue services agreement with the City of Dunwoody through 2067.

DeKalb County Watershed Management supplies the city’s water, so a commercial account falls under the county’s backflow program: an assembly sized to the hazard on the customer’s side of the meter, tested every year by a certified tester. Medical facilities, car washes, salons, dry cleaners, and auto repair need a reduced-pressure assembly, while commercial offices and retail need a double check valve. DeKalb keeps no list of approved testers.

After storms cut power to the Scott Candler water plant on September 13 and 14, 2019, DeKalb issued a boil-water advisory and kept it on the city’s residents and businesses longer than the rest of the county. A pressure loss or water-main work can let dirty water siphon back through cross connections, which is why DeKalb requires backflow assemblies to stay tested.

NOAA storm reports from the night of the December 29, 2024 tornado list trees down on Perimeter Center West, Valley View Road, and Womack Road, and the tornado itself downed 50 to 100 large trees. Trees on a roof or a power service can leave damage that is easy to miss, so check the roofline and the electrical service after a night like that.
