College Park Fire Safety Inspection Before Your Business License

Every new business in College Park must pass a Fire Safety Inspection by the city’s own Fire Marshal’s Office before it can get its business license. The city schedules the building and fire inspections on Mondays and Thursdays only, after zoning approval, and charges a $150 inspection and zoning review fee and a $75 non-refundable administrative fee. Book the inspection date before you set an opening date.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Commercial plumbing, commercial electrical, commercial HVAC, commercial painting, commercial flooring, preventive maintenance, facility management, commercial roofing, fire sprinkler inspection, restaurant equipment repair, commercial cleaning, mold remediation, and commercial landscaping.

The Fire Marshal warns that changing a building’s occupancy type brings new code requirements that may be costly. Daycares, schools, restaurants, and industrial sites may also need sprinklers, fire alarms, grease hoods with suppression, or panic hardware. Every commercial location must keep current fire extinguishers, working smoke alarms or detectors, and working exits, with more than one exit when the occupant load is over 50.

Under College Park Code Section 10-32, the city charges a $500 inspection fee per tap when it lets a contractor install a water or sewer connection. A city-installed 2-inch water tap with sewer totals $3,800, not counting the meter vault. The fee schedule dates from 2021, so budget a new connection above that figure.

New electrical service for a business is set up through the city’s Customer Service, not Georgia Power, because the city has its own electric utility, College Park Power. The city also owns and runs its water and sewer system, and its Water and Sewer Division installs the meters, fire hydrants, and taps. New-service requests go to the city, not Georgia Power.

An EF0 tornado with peak winds near 75 mph touched down just west of Hartsfield-Jackson on April 13, 2020, and crossed I-285 north of the I-85 interchange. Golf-ball-size hail, 1.75 inches, was reported in College Park on March 15, 2008, more than ten years ago, and quarter-size hail fell near I-285 on June 26, 2025. Note any new roof or equipment damage after each event.

Hapeville runs its own Fire Marshal’s Office. The first inspection and first follow-up are free, a second follow-up costs $100 and a third $150, plan review is $0.50 per sprinkler head or alarm device with a $50 minimum, and a kitchen hood suppression system costs $50. The Hapeville Water Department maintains lines up to and including the meter, and the owner is responsible for the service line from there.

Call or send a message with the building and the work you have in mind. That is all it takes to get started.
