Tucker Routes Fire Plans Through DeKalb County

Since May 15, 2026, DeKalb County Fire Rescue, not the city, inspects every active building, fire-suppression, and land-development permit here. The city must first issue a city services routing sheet before plans go to DeKalb Fire, and the approved building and life-safety plans must be on site at inspection. Tucker still issues its own certificate of occupancy. Keep a printed set of approved plans on site.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Commercial plumbing, commercial electrical, commercial HVAC, commercial painting, commercial flooring, preventive maintenance, facility management, commercial roofing, fire sprinkler inspection, restaurant equipment repair, commercial cleaning, mold remediation, and commercial landscaping.

A new business, a move, a change of ownership, or a change of use in Tucker needs a $150 certificate of occupancy with an on-site life-safety inspection. Spaces over 5,000 square feet, buildings over one story, and every assembly, school, institutional, or residential occupancy must submit architect- or engineer-sealed plans showing the sprinkler system. The checklist also asks for a sprinkler green tag dated within the past 12 months.

The city runs its own stormwater utility. The council set the fee at $6 per equivalent residential unit per month starting July 1, 2023, and one unit is 3,000 square feet of hard surface that water cannot soak into. Count the paved lots and roofs on your parcel to see how many units apply to you.

On November 18, 2015, more than ten years ago, an EF-0 tornado with estimated 75 mph winds touched down in Tucker’s industrial area northeast of the Mountain Industrial Boulevard exit off US-78. It ripped apart a wall at one Hammermill Road business and peeled back part of the roof and metal siding on another across the street, causing $60,000 in damage. NOAA rates EF-0 at 65 to 85 mph.

On August 21, 2013, more than ten years ago, South Fork Peachtree Creek left its banks near Orion Drive and Lawrenceville Highway, flooding nearby ground. NOAA notes that overwhelmed or blocked storm drains flood the roads and buildings nearby. Walk your site drains, low entries, and loading docks, because those are where water gets in first.

Yes, a commercial business license in Clarkston cannot be issued without a DeKalb County Fire Marshal inspection report, and the certificate of occupancy follows only after the building and fire inspections pass. Every renewal asks for the annual DeKalb County Fire Rescue inspection report and, for food businesses, the annual DeKalb grease permit. Renewals were due December 31, 2025, with a grace period to March 1, 2026.
