Brookhaven’s Fire Marshal Inspects Every Commercial Building

Brookhaven has no fire department of its own, since DeKalb County Fire Rescue answers its calls. The city’s own Fire Marshal’s Office inspects every permitted commercial and apartment building, including its fire alarm and sprinkler systems. That means the inspection for your building is scheduled with the city, not the county. Keep your system test records current and on site.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Commercial plumbing, commercial electrical, commercial HVAC, commercial painting, commercial flooring, preventive maintenance, facility management, commercial roofing, fire sprinkler inspection, restaurant equipment repair, commercial cleaning, mold remediation, and commercial landscaping.

An inspection costs $100 each, and a re-inspection after a failed one is $50 the first time and $100 each time after, paid in advance. A new or altered sprinkler, fire alarm, or hood suppression system needs a $75 fire system permit and plan review of $75 minimum or $1 per alarm device or $0.50 per sprinkler head, whichever is greater. These fees took effect October 7, 2023. Budget for a possible second visit.

No, the Fire Marshal inspects a build-out or renovation at 50, 80, and 100 percent, and the business cannot open until the 100 percent final inspection is approved. Any sprinkler or fire alarm installation or alteration, and any fixed fire suppression system, also needs certification letters or test documentation. Gather those letters before the final inspection.

Permitted construction work in Brookhaven may run only Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., never on Sundays or city holidays, and the site must post the city’s hours sign. Noisy work in an occupied building has to fit inside those windows, so ask for the schedule before you plan tenant moves.

On January 12, 2023, NOAA logged an estimated 52-knot, about 60 mph, thunderstorm gust in Brookhaven that put a tree on a house near Caldwell Road and Redding Road. One roofing trade body notes that rooftop equipment that is not properly attached can be displaced in high winds, tearing the roof membrane and letting water into the building. Unsecured rooftop equipment is the first thing a gust of that size can shift.

Call or send a message with the building and the work you have in mind. That is all it takes to get started.
