Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The concrete slab should be tested for moisture, because a slab that seems dry can still pass moisture vapor, and moisture can vary through the year with climate. Excess moisture can make flooring lose its bond or grow mold, which is where mold remediation enters. Leaks from commercial plumbing lines are another cause. Cracks and holes in the substrate are repaired so the floor goes over a flat and smooth surface.

A flooring request is reviewed for the space and the product, and approved work is quoted before it is scheduled. Substrate repairs and moisture checks come first. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends that carpet go in as the last trade on a job, after commercial painting is done. Level changes follow ADA limits, then you review the work and receive the invoice.

Carpet tile costs more up front but can be replaced in sections, while broadloom installs faster with fewer seams. A slab with too much moisture may need a mitigation system or a different product, and manufacturers typically do not cover moisture failures when their recommendations were not followed. Extra tiles bought at install, called attic stock, make later repairs easier.

Federal facility guidance from NIH says broadloom installation requires furniture to be removed from the room, while carpet tile can go in by section around furniture. Luxury vinyl tile and plank are typically more moisture-tolerant than vinyl sheet. Low-VOC products with CRI Green Label or FloorScore certification help indoor air, and floor care afterward falls under commercial cleaning.

It depends on the area and the product. For carpet, CRI calls for the building’s HVAC to hold 65 to 95°F and no more than 65 percent humidity for 48 hours before installation and 72 hours after, with traffic limited for 24 to 48 hours on field-adhesive jobs. Removing asbestos floor tile over 10 square feet in Georgia adds a ten-working-day notice period.
