In the Area
Gwinnett County provides fire protection to Peachtree Corners businesses under an intergovernmental agreement, so Gwinnett’s Fire Marshal’s Office is the inspector, not a city one. Its checklist asks for a deficiency-free annual fire sprinkler test report, an annual fire alarm test report, and, for private hydrants, an annual hydrant test report, handed to the Fire Inspector. Gwinnett inspects at varying intervals, so keep the reports current.

Questions
Commercial plumbing, commercial electrical, commercial HVAC, commercial painting, commercial flooring, preventive maintenance, facility management, commercial roofing, fire sprinkler inspection, restaurant equipment repair, commercial cleaning, mold remediation, and commercial landscaping.
A new business gets its zoning use approval and occupational tax certificate from the city, but must schedule and pay for a fire inspection and certificate of occupancy with Gwinnett County through the ZIP Portal. It then hands a copy of the fire certificate to the city’s Business License Officer with its license application. A fire permit is also needed before any change to a fire protection system.
Gwinnett’s checklist requires hood, duct, and fan cleaning by a qualified company and a hood fire suppression system tagged by a state-licensed company with a service date within six months of the fire inspection. Extinguishers must be inspected yearly by a Georgia licensed extinguisher company with a signed and dated tag, and stored at least 30 inches from electrical panels and mechanical equipment.
A commercial customer’s backflow assembly on Gwinnett County’s water system must be tested on installation and at least once a year, at the customer’s expense, by a county-approved certified tester. The tester files the report with Gwinnett Water Resources within 15 days, and the director may shut off water to a premises whose required assembly is not installed, tested, and maintained.
Gwinnett requires any establishment with food preparation, including restaurants, coffee shops, delis, bakeries, hotels, schools, and day cares, to have at least one 1,500-gallon exterior grease interceptor, with more capacity added in 1,500-gallon tanks in series. Mechanical skimmers are prohibited. Peachtree Corners sends food-service tenants to Gwinnett County Water and Sewer for grease trap approval.
Yes, all commercial businesses inside Norcross, as in the rest of Gwinnett, need a Gwinnett County fire certificate of occupancy, and Norcross’s building inspector will not be scheduled for a change of occupancy until it is issued. Norcross’s water and sewer system moved to Gwinnett County on May 13, 2013, so the county’s backflow and grease rules apply there as in Peachtree Corners.
